TRAIN passengers in and out of Taunton Station can expect disruption when First Great Western workers go on strike later this month.

Members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union are walking out for 24 hours on August 23 and for three days from August 29, the Bank Holiday weekend.

The RMT says the action is because of threats to jobs, services and safety from the introduction of the new Hitachi Intercity trains from 2017.

An FGW spokesman said the new trains would have more seats and deliver faster and more frequent journeys for passengers.

He said: "The key issue remains that we want the driver to close the doors, which is fundamental to our ability to run the faster, more frequent services customers should expect from a 21st Century railway."
