WIVELISCOMBE Flower Show and Fete is hoping to be able to stage their annual show again this summer on Saturday August 20th after two years of being denied the chance due to Covid.

Formerly known as Wiveliscombe Horticultural Show, the newly revamped show has managed to secure local Wiveliscombe pub, The Bear Inn, as it’s major sponsor.

The Show had been running for 105 years until Covid intervened and due to it’s regular venue at Kingsmead School being redeveloped, the committee took the decision to return the Show to its original site on Wiveliscombe Rec.

Previously a major fixture in the town’s diary in its heyday, it was felt that it was time to try and recreate this iconic event and stage a large fun family day out.

The show will centre around the competitive classes involving flowers, vegetables, handicraft, cookery, children’s section plus art and photography and schedules will shortly be available.

The exhibits will be staged in marquees kindly provided by The Bear Inn and will be on show once judging has finished.

In addition, there will be side shows and stalls, a tug of war, children’s competitions and activities as well as refreshments and plenty for all the family to enjoy.

Chairperson, Kirsty Boutflower said: “We are delighted that the Show is returning to the Rec. and hugely indebted to the Bear for its most generous sponsorship and support.

"We are confident that this Show will provide something for everyone to enjoy and the intention is to make it a fund raiser in the long-term for important projects within the town.

"In addition local business Ashwood Shepherds Huts have offered a fantastic prize for the child scoring the highest points in the Children’s Section in the form of a Family Day out to Harry Potter World.”

The Bear Inn itself has also recently undergone further improvements under owners Jon and Millie and this has not escaped the notice of local celebrities who have recently been seen enjoying the premises.

Over the New Year, rock legend Paul Weller was spotted enjoying a bite to eat and regular on the BBC’s Masterchef, William Sitwell often pops in.
