24 NEWLY graduates have joined Avon Fire & Rescue Service (AF&RS) after completing their training school on Wednesday May 3 following the successful completion of an intensive 13-week recruits' course.

To commemorate the occasion, an official ceremony was held at Severn Park Training Centre, Avonmouth.

The cohort of 24 trainee firefighters showcased their newly learnt skills during the events, demonstrating the training they have acquired throughout their rigorous firefighting course to their families, friends and loved ones.

During the 13-week course, the recruits recieved a combination of practical and theoretical training to equip them with all the skills and knowledge they need to ensure that they are able to serve and protect their communities.

The rigorous training includes: road traffic collision and extrication techniques, fire, water rescues, safe working at a height, using breathing apparatus and community fire safety.

AF&RS chief fire officer Simon Shilton said: “I am incredibly proud of all the new recruits’ efforts, and am pleased to welcome them into Avon Fire & Rescue Service for what I hope will be long and successful careers.

"Your journey with our Service is just beginning and the skills you've learnt will continue to develop as you begin to serve your communities.

"I’d like to extend my thanks to the new recruits and their families, for their hard work and unwavering support."

Having successfully completed their intensive training course, the recruits will put their valuable training into practice as they join stations across the local area to kick-start their firefighting careers at AF&RS.

Within each training school, Severn Park trainers select an individual that has shown exceptional skill and competency, for the Silver Axe award.

Steve Nicholas, trainer at Severn Park said, “Whilst attending here at Severn Park Training Centre they have embraced all the challenges of training and demonstrated the very best standards of behaviour. They have achieved the best start to a long and enjoyable career and will add great value to Avon Fire and Rescue Service.”
