A Somerset author will be explaining how his latest novel, which explores Sir Francis Drake’s circumnavigation of the globe, was inspired by the Elizabethan era at an event later this month.
Justin Newland will discuss his work, The Mark of the Salamander, at Taunton Library on April 25 from 2-3.30pm.
His lecture, ‘The Limits of Empire’, will highlight early Elizabethan England’s transformation from a remote isle to a global heart for trade and communication, a change ignited by Dr John Dee’s book of the same name.
The Mark of the Salamander encompasses the secret history behind Sir Francis Drake’s journey, while encapsulating elements of historical fiction and magical realism.
Mr Newland's previous novels include The Genes of Isis, The Old Dragon’s Head, The Coronation and The Abdication.
His debut novel, The Genes of Isis, was published in 2018 and is an epic fantasy set under Ancient Egyptian skies.
His second, The Old Dragon’s Head, was released in the same year and is an historical thriller set in Ming Dynasty in China.
Besides authorship, Mr Newland takes part in book signings and radio interviews.
