GALMINGTON saw victory snatched from their grasp when they visited Exeter in Division 1 of the regional league on Sunday.

The first quarter was a close, high-scoring affair but there was nothing to separate the teams at the first break with the score locked at 13-13.

Galmington had the edge in the second period with goalkeeper Helen Jones outstanding against a very talented Exeter attack but they could not open a significant lead and reached half-time just 24-22 ahead.

Galmington stayed in front in the third quarter but each time they opened a gap Exeter responded well and the lead was reduced to just one goal with the visitors leading 33-32.

At the start of the final period Galmington went four goals in front and seemed to be on course for victory.

But this just galvanised the impressive Exeter team who then turned the match on its head to win an excellent contest by 47-43, which was a little harsh on a Galmington side who had led for most of the game.

In Division Two Trident began well against Hucclecote Comets at the Vale but there was little between the sides after the first quarter with Trident only 12-10 ahead.

They began to take control in the next period to build a 25-18 advantage but the match was far from won at the halfway point.

The third quarter proved decisive, with Trident’s shooting pairing of Jordyn Baker and Polly Land combining superbly, and they pulled away to lead 45-29 going into the last quarter.

Trident then remained focused in the final quarter to record a fine victory by 58 goals to 40.

In the Premier Division of the Somerset League Hovelands had a local derby against Vivary and it was Vivary who started the stronger, storming into an 11-4 lead.

Hovelands, however, gradually worked their way back into the match and only trailed 14-13 at the end of the initial period.

Hovelands maintained their momentum in the second quarter and, with goal defence Danni Cross-Henley constantly breaking up the Vivary attacking moves, they built a 24-18 lead.

The third quarter was a topsy-turvy affair as Hovelands went 29-22 ahead only for Vivary to score six goals without reply to reduce the deficit to a single goal.

However, Hovelands scored the final three goals of the quarter to lead 32-28 at the break.

It was still anybody’s game but Hovelands managed to open up a nine-goal lead and then resisted a late Vivary rally to win an excellent contest 45-39.

Vivary’s player of the match was Heather Duddridge.

In Division One Claremont defeated Tone 37-31 with Jazz Wilson, Kerry Nelson and Caitlin Evans combining well in attack.

Tone’s player-of-the-match was Vicki Cornish.

Meanwhile Parkfield, for whom Ffion Watkins was in fine form, recorded their first victory of the season with an impressive 41-37 win over Quantock.

The Taunton side’s player of the match was Helen Lucas.

Queensway proved too strong for Division Two opponents Priory winning 31-20 with Scarlett Scott-Collins consistently turning defence into attack.

In Division Three Newbarn made a tremendous but ultimately unsuccessful recovery against the Taunton club’s Blackdown.

They recovered from 22-10 down at half-time to eventually lose by just four goals, 34-30.

Hannah Lenthall again produced an excellent performance for Newbarn while Mel Reynolds and Sarah Hughes shone for for Blackdown who were claiming their sixth victory on the spin.

Other Taunton result: Monmouth beat Mars 46-26. POM Linda Holder and Ruth White.
