Tiverton 12-5 Wiveliscombe

TIVERTON edged this Western Counties West league encounter on a pitch that made it a game of attrition with both teams looking physically drained on the final whistle.

The home team playing away from the clubhouse with a diagonal wind in their favour put the visitors under early pressure using their large forwards to create driving mauls.

Scrum half Jack Sampson took advantage of a ruck close to Wiveliscombe's try line to sneak in for the first try of the game.

Wiveliscombe had the odd period of pressure threatening the home teams try line with the visitors scrum half Richard Baker looking dangerous but it was Tiverton who created a chance for their dangerous centre George Whiting who broke Wiveliscombe's defence to score his teams second try.

Flyhalf Callum Stone converted to give his team a 12-0 lead.

The remainder of the first half was played between the twenty two metre lines with neither team able to create opportunities.

Wiveliscombe had a slight advantage in the second half using the wind to keep the home team in their own half and had several opportunities after creating good attacking positions.

The visitors only downside was their lineouts which failed to function on numerous occasions and was probably a factor to them crossing for just one try which came from Tom Simms who broke away from a driving maul to run forty yards to score.

Tiverton secured their fifth successive victory and Wivey had to make do with one loosing bonus point.

Wiveliscombe's 1st XV next game is on March 5 at home to Honiton in a league match.
