Somerset Division One: Minehead AFC 7-0 Castle Cary
MINEHEAD'S first home game of the new season saw them overrun a particularly youthful Castle Cary squad containing six teenagers.
It was however one of Minehead’s teenagers’ Alfie Lyons who created the first real goalscoring chance of the day when after nine minutes he cleverly beat his defender inside the box and squared to Matt Trump with plenty of time to curl the ball into the top corner with from 15 yards.
The visitors’ goal had two more close shaves when firstly Trump shot inches wide after good work from Tiago, followed by another Blues teenager Bertie Harvey-Larmar hitting the post with a side-footed effort.
Twenty-one minutes in veteran goal-scorer Guy Burns turned provider for Benn Bartlett to double the advantage but after a requested drinks break Minehead seemed to take their foot off the gas and the visitors came more into contention.
The lapse was relatively temporary with Lyons becoming one of Minehead’s youngest ever goal-scorers when he cooly turned his defender and slotted competently passed the keeper to make it three, seven minutes before the break.
Minehead’s precise passing was once again at the forefront and a slick 1-2 with Lyons released Burns to run through from near the half way line to make it four followed by a penetrating run from marauding right back Martyn Phillips took him to the edge of the penalty area where he found Trump who lifted the ball calmly over the overworked keeper to score his second.
Three Minehead substitutions saw Olly Prescott, Hubi Wejnerowski and Dan Vickers introduced before another direct run through the heart of Castle Cary’s tiring defence by Phillips, produced another goal when he supplied the opportunity for Prescott to open his account on the day with an impressive dipping volley from outside of the box.
After Wejnerowski saw his effort come back off the foot of post, the scoring was wrapped up by a poacher’s goal from Burns quarter of an hour from time, taking his tally for the club to 146 and just six short of the putting himself in the clubs’ top 5 scorers in history.
